\n\n<\/p>

The department of Pharmacognosy is dedicated to\nnatural and herbal medicinal product research in pharmaceutical sciences. This\ndepartment deals with study of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, taxonomy and\nethnobiology of natural product obtained from plant, animal, marine and other\nlife origins.  <\/span>Roots of the study of\nplant & their medicinal use goes back to the ancient civilization. Our\nancestors use the plants for various purposes such as antiseptic, antimalarial,\nantibiotics, antihypertensive, cosmetics, etc. In the Pharmacognosy department\nareas of active interest include such as Isolation & extraction of crude\ndrugs, characterization and biological studies of phytoconstituents, Identification\nof morphological & microscopical characters. Pharmacognosy department having\ncore subjects such as Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry \u2013 I, Pharmacognosy\n& Phytochemistry \u2013 II, & Herbal Drug Technology.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pharmacognosy\n& Phytochemistry\u2013I: <\/span><\/b>The subject involves the\nfundamentals of Pharmacognosy like scope, classification of crude drugs, their\nidentification and evaluation, phytochemicals present in them and their\nmedicinal properties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Pharmacognosy\n& Phytochemistry \u2013 II: <\/span><\/b>The\nmain purpose of this subject is to impart the student the knowledge of how the\nsecondary metabolites are produced in the crude drugs, how to isolate &\nidentify & produce them industrially. Also this subject involves the study\nof producing the plant & Phytochemical through plant tissue culture, drug\ninteraction & basic principles of traditional system of medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Herbal Drug Technology:<\/span><\/b> This subject gives the student the\nknowledge of basic understanding of herbal drug industry, the quality of raw\nmaterial, guidelines for quality of herbal drugs, herbal cosmetics, natural\nsweeteners, Nutraceutical etc. The subject also emphasizes on Good\nManufacturing Practices (GMP), patenting and regulatory issues of herbal drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00d8 \n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Determination of stomatal\nnumber and index<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00d8 \n<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>Determination of vein islet number, vein islet\ntermination and palisade ratio.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00d8 \n<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span>Determination of size of starch grains,\ncalcium oxalate crystals by eye piece micrometer<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00d8 \n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Determination of the\nalcohol content of Asava and Arista<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u00d8 \n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Incorporation of prepared\nand standardized extract in cosmetic formulations like creams, lotions and\nshampoos and their evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
